Syria or Iran-or a major military stand-down with North Korea-Beyond Shock and
Awe is a provocative vision of America's military of the future. Included are

"shock and awe"; Professor William Forstchen on how precision guided weaponry
will eliminate "problem" individuals before war can begin; Eugene Sullivan on
the legality of preemptive attacks; William Terdoslavich on how America's swift
victory in Iraq turned into a bloody stalemate; John Helfers on how cultural
knowledge helps win wars and build alliances; and Eric Haney on gaining Rapid
Dominance of adversaries through shock and awe.

JAMES H. BIRDSONG
is available at Colonial Heights, home of the author, as well as at the Rome-Floyd County Library gift shop, retailing for $25. Written by James H. Birdsong who lives in the old Ford-Gibbons Plantation, near "Six Mile" off US Highways 27 & 411 on Booze Mountain Road, this historical novel embellishes the history of the area from 1832 until after the Civil War in a masterful telling of the stories of powerful forces at work shaping area and Indian history in this fascinating and beautiful region of Northwest Georgia. Mr. Birdsong became interested in the project after learning the early history of his home, (which he and his wife have faithfully restored in as near its original form as possible,) from descendants of the original builder, and extensive research on the area's early history.

The Front Porch Prophet
Written in Northwest Georgia terms, "Prophet" is at once amusing, sad,
healing, and full of the inevitable flavor that belongs to this region of
the foothills of the Appalachians. Salty language and a "slight" exaggeration
here and there add to the charm of the book, and the ending (don't read ahead)
leaves a satisfied glow long after the last page is read.

When the charred body of a promiscuous, self-proclaimed witch is discovered at a farm called Sorrow Wood, nearly everyone in the sleepy town of Sand Valley, Alabama, is drawn into the case. As the murder probe continues, a multitude of secrets are revealed, including one that leads back to the rock castle home of Wendell Blackmon, Sand Valley's police chief, and his beloved wife Reva. The town's inhabitants ruminate on the true meaning of commitment, love, death, hope, and loss as they delve deeper into questions such as Who was this woman? Where did she come from? and What did her presence mean to Wendell, Reva, and the townspeople of Sand Valley?
